Who Is Your Jesus?

Sermon from Resurrection Sunday 2018

Who Is Your Jesus?

Message Notes

Summary: Who is Jesus to you today? (Are you willing to trust him with your life?)

Key Scripture (Daniel 7:13-14): "In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all peoples, nations and men of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

Daniel 7:17-18 (NIV)  'The four great beasts are four kingdoms that will rise from the earth. 18 But the saints of the Most High will receive the kingdom and will possess it forever--yes, for ever and ever.'

How does Daniel describe this "son of man":

  • Enters heaven and the presence of God
  • Given divine and eternal authority
  • Worshiped universally and eternally
  • He will establish his eternal kingdom after the fourth beast rises up
  • He will pass his eternal kingdom to his saints to possess forever and ever

Important Takeaway: The fourth beast was the Roman Empire, during which Christ established his eternal kingdom in the hearts and lives of his saints - the church. The Roman Empire tried to stop him and his church, but Rome failed and Jesus and His Kingdom is alive and thriving today.

Key Scripture (Daniel 9:24-26): "Seventy 'sevens' (the word can mean weeks or sevens – but it means 70 x 7 or 490 years) are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy. 25 "Know and understand this: From the issuing of the decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem (which would later happen until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven 'sevens,' and sixty-two 'sevens.' It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26  After the sixty-two 'sevens,' the Anointed One will be cut off and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary.

Notice what this Anointed One (Messiah) will accomplish:

  • Finish Transgression
  • End to sin
  • Atone for wickedness
  • Usher in Eternal Righteousness
  • Seal up vision and prophesy
  • and Anoint the Most Holy

When and How:

  • 483 years after a future (to Daniel) king decrees that Jerusalem can be rebuilt
  • This Anointed One would enter Jerusalem and be killed
  • (see Isaiah 53 for a more explicit description of what would happen to and through Christ)
  • Jerusalem was destroyed again in 70 AD by the Roman army

God speaks, and his word is true.

Conclusion:

  • Those who misidentify Jesus usually do so because they prefer sin over His love, or they have too much pride to humble themselves and admit they were wrong acting and wrong thinking.
  • Those who correctly identify Jesus and embrace him as Lord and Savior are radically transformed and testify of his great love and their trust in him for life eternal.
  • Determine who your Jesus is in your heart and mind today.
